Tijuana Libre

An experimental film in the making.

PRODUCTION Fall 2026 | RELEASE Late 2027

Synopsis

Tijuana Libre is a sensory portrait of a day in the life of a city infamous for its complicated history with cartel violence and negative portrayal in the media. The film explores the city beyond the stereotypes, without judgment. Traveling through different scenes of the city and the people who inhabit them. No interviews. No explanations. Just a modern city symphony of my hometown that its complexity and richness have been overlooked for far too long.

Director’s Statement

As a filmmaker born and raised in Tijuana, it has become a necessity to show the surreal and contradictory place I grew up in — a city that isn't at the center of cinematic and artistic discourse, and it's Tijuana's moment.

Having lived outside the country allowed me to experience the distance from which Tijuana is usually observed and reduced to stereotypes. Returning meant a re-reading of the city. Spaces I had previously overlooked, because they were simply part of the routine, now revealed a rare and particular beauty, a beauty not commonly associated with Tijuana.

In an international context where the border and its cities are once again being reduced to discourses of fear and oversimplification, I believe it is urgent to humanize Tijuana. Beyond a cinematic work, the film aspires to become a document of urban memory: a personal and collective experience of what it means to grow up, move through, and dream in a border city like Tijuana
